Lisa-Marie's Made in Maine Named 2021 Maine Retailer of the Year
Augusta, Maine — October 28, 2021 —The board of directors of the Retail Association of Maine announced yesterday that Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine with locations in Bath and Portland, Maine, has been named the 2021 Retailer of the Year. The award was presented to the owners, Lisa-Marie and Andy Stewart, and the staff of Lisa-Marie’s on Wednesday, October 27 at their flagship location in Bath.
The Retailer of the Year Award has three main criteria: continued growth in employees or sales; commitment of company resources to community projects; and creation of a positive work environment for all employees. This year encompassed a competitive field of nominations and Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine was chosen for its growth, dedication to the communities they are in, and strong support of their employees. Lisa-Marie’s values aligned perfectly with the award criteria and they were unanimously selected as this year’s recipient.
Lisa-Marie Stewart has been involved in promoting Made in Maine products since 1990. She first started selling her work in a Brunswick store very much like Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine called Stone Soup Artisans, which featured Maine-made work.
Soon she was on the shop’s management team and became a member of the Society of Southern Maine Craftsmen as well as United Maine Craftsmen. After dozens and dozens of shows, Lisa-Marie’s husband, Andy, gave her the push to open her own store in Downtown Bath. In 2003, about 50 artisans and craftsmen joined Lisa-Marie on 170 Front Street. But she didn’t stop there; in 2006, she broke through the wall into 168 Front Street and expanded in order to accommodate many more clever artists and craftsmen.
In 2010, Lisa-Marie opened the newest Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine location at 35 Exchange Street providing Portland with its only exclusively Made-in-Maine store.
Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine continues to be family owned and operated. Their employees are lovers of Maine-made work who have joined the team to continue to promote more than 400 other small Maine makers and businesses.
The Retail Association’s board, comprised of fellow retail businesses owners, recognized the impressive growth and commitment to giving back to the community which supports them. Curtis Picard, President and CEO of the Retail Association of Maine, stated, “The Maine Retailer of the Year is not about being the biggest retailer. It’s about making a difference in your communities and impacting the lives of your customers and employees. Supporting locally owned businesses is critical, but in Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine’s case, supporting them means supporting more than 400 other Maine businesses and craftspeople.”
“It is truly humbling for our company to be named as Retailer of the Year,” said Lisa-Marie Stewart, owner of Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine. “My husband, Andy, and I are honored to be this year’s recipient. We must thank the hundreds of Maine makers and small businesses we support, our dedicated employees who support us, and the thousands of customers who allow us to continue promoting the products made in our great state.”
Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine is an involved community member in both Bath and Portland. They support Shop for a Cause in Bath and Portland; Kindness Day in Bath; and they stepped up to be featured in the statewide Let’s Be Kind campaign to urge patience, understanding and kindness during the pandemic.
The Retail Association of Maine has presented the annual Retailer of the Year Award since 1980. Other winners include Fielder’s Choice Ice Cream (2019), Union Farm Equipment (2018) Loyal Biscuit Company (2017), Day’s Jewelers (2016), Sea Bags (2015), Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream (2014), Mexicali Blues (2013), Wild Oats Bakery & Café (2012).
