The Honorable Susan Collins has been unanimously selected by the Retail Association of Maine Board of Directors to receive the organization’s 2013 Jim McGregor Government Service Award.

The award will be presented on Friday, November 8th at the association’s 80th annual meeting at the Portland Regency Hotel and Spa in Portland, ME. The Jim McGregor Government Service Award has been presented annually to a wide list of state and local officials. The award was designed to mirror the key word in its name: service

“Senator Collins is widely known for her support of Maine business. However, what is less well-known was how she stuck her neck out for Maine retailers. Her critical votes to lower swipe fees for retailers and co-sponsorship of a bill to level the playing field for all retailers, are just two examples of where she went above and beyond for Mainers,” stated Curtis Picard, Executive Director of the Retail Association of Maine. “The Jim McGregor Award recognizes an individual who goes above and beyond just like Jim McGregor did for our members for so many years.”

Her significant legislative accomplishments in the area of business development led to Senator Collins being named, “The Guardian of Small Business,” by the National Federation of Independent Businesses. On July 12, 2012, Senator Collins cast her 5,000th consecutive roll call vote.  She has never missed a roll call vote during her entire time in the U.S. Senate.

“Senator Collins’ continued support of Maine retailers in battling hefty swipe fees and keeping in mind the vast number of small businesses in Maine, made her a clear choice for this years’ service award,” said the Retail Association of Maine Board President Fox Keim, of Kittery Trading Post.

In 2010, the Retail Association of Maine named this award after its retired director of government affairs, Mr. Jim McGregor. Jim’s decades of hard work in the public policy arena paved the way for setting the standard for an award that recognizes an individual who goes above and beyond in support of Maine’s retail community.

The award will be presented on Friday, November 8th, at the Retail Association of Maine’s 80th Annual Meeting at the Portland Regency Hotel and Spa in Portland, ME. The 2012 recipient was Representative Kerri Prescott of Topsham. Past winners have included House Speaker Bob Nutting, former State Senator David Trahan, Consumer Credit Protection Director Will Lund, former State Representative Sawin Millett, Attorney General Janet Mills and District Attorneys Stephanie Anderson and Evert Fowle of Cumberland and Kennebec Counties, respectively.
